Lower Unemployment Rate Backs Up Gains in Buffalo Job Market

The unemployment rate for the Buffalo metropolitan area declined to 4.7 percent in August, the best for that month since 2007. A year ago the jobless rate for the area was 5.2 percent. That follows last week’s report — also from the state Department of Labor — on the job increases in the Buffalo Niagara market. Tuesday’s follow-up also showed a rise in the labor force, year over year, to 556,500 from 555,900. Rochester had an unemployment rate of 4.5 percent in August, down from 4.8 percent last year. Read More


Buffalo Area Would Rank 76th Among the World’s Nations in Economic Power

The Buffalo area generated more than $56 billion of goods and services last year. That local output would have ranked 76th among the world’s nations, putting Buffalo just ahead of Panama. GMP and GDP are measures of the total output of goods and services in metropolitan areas and countries, respectively. The Bureau of Economic Analysis, in fact, officially refers to GMP as “gross domestic product by metropolitan area.” The two-county Buffalo area finished 53rd in the national standings released this morning, based on the local GMP of $56.46 billion as of 2015. Read More


IT Workers Brace for Outsourcing, Layoffs at Health Insurer

A major health insurer, Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC), is planning to outsource part of its information technology operation. The employees don’t have all the details about what’s in store for them, but this may be a large IT layoff. Employees were recently informed that 70% of the positions in the IT group, in infrastructure, will be outsourced, according to two IT workers who requested anonymity. Estimates on the number of employees who would be affected varies, but the move could involve 540 people in IT. The layoffs are planned from February to April. Read More
